Genetics Labs

Genetics Labs

GSK is committed to finding the genetic basis of various common diseases and individual's responses to certain medicines. The Genetics, Laboratory, and Sciences Departments at GSK play a significant role in these exciting efforts.

The Genetics Labs perform three core functions that support the work of the Genetics Research division at GSK.

Sample Management
Sample Management

Genetics Samples Management provides central storage and distribution of DNA and other human samples collected for genetic and genomic research. The facility manages samples for GSK scientists worldwide, operating from Research Triangle Park in the US and from sites in Harlow, and Stevenage in the UK.

DNA Sequencing

DNA Sequencing

DNA Sequencing is used to determine the exact sequence (or order) of bases in a particular DNA fragment. The sequencing lab processes samples for scientists within GSK, including those in the Genetics Division and in the Research and Development Division.

Genotyping
Genotyping

Genotyping is a method of defining what alleles are present at a polymorphic site (A,C,G, or T) an individual has at a specific location in their genome. At GSK, genotyping is performed on DNA samples from patients who agree specifically to participate in a particular genetic research study. By analyzing these samples, scientists hope to learn more about genes that cause common diseases and why some individuals respond well to a medicine and others experience serious side effects or don't respond at all.
